The Art of Blushing & The Lazarus Complex

Thursdays-Saturdays, November 8-17, 2018

The Art of Blushing and The Lazarus Complex are two new standalone shows in Ben Moorad’s ongoing study of the will to live and the will to die. Part of the multi-year From the Envelope of Suicides project, these shows explore a collection of 124 stories of people in New Britain, Connecticut, from 1941 to 1948 who tried to end their lives.

Writer Ben Moorad’s grandfather, a refugee from Persia who became the first psychiatrist in New Britain, collected those stories – he worked on the problem of suicide for 12 years in the 30s and 40s and never talked about it with his family. Ben has spent the past 11 years researching these stories of the unique struggles of long-forgotten people, discovering how they reflect on common human experiences and how they fit together to create a social history of a city in transition and a fractured snapshot of a world at war.

The Art of Blushing and The Lazarus Complex is a genre-blending, provocative and immersive experience that combines vocal performance, music and visual projections. Directed by Jonathan Walters, the shows will be performed by Ben Moorad and 3 other readers with a live improvised score from Wilson Vediner and 2 other members of the bands Months and Point Juncture WA.
